To subvert American Idol. I applaud the effort, for the sake of our nation’s impressionable youth. Though, it’s a shame we constantly vote for the worst in the elections that actually count for something.
Speaking of which, Iraq embraces democracy- finally. Begin the pullout of troops?

I think I need to expand the type of work that I’m willing to do. I’ve had 2 interviews recently, and both failed to bear any results. They were both for teaching positions, though, and there was a lot of competition for them. I guess it’s only been two and a half weeks since I started looking, but I do need something soon. There seems to be plenty of call centre work that hasn’t yet been outsourced.
Anyways, this is for everyone, but mostly Sean, who keeps bugging me. My China photos. I did remove certain ones where I’m visibly intoxicated, however. Want to keep things a little classy around here.
Cheers!

From Canada.com:
Accusing the minority government of “gross negligence”, two Liberal MPs had 10 boxes of Conservative personnel files carted on a trolley for three blocks through pouring rain to Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office in order to have them returned.
The files contain highly personal information, judgments on individual employee performance and comments by their peers and supervisors, Ontario MP Mark Holland and Montreal MP Marlene Jennings said. They accused the government of “gross ineptitude” and “cavalier disregard” for privacy.
Ok. So, these files obviously should not have been left behind when the Tories and Liberals switched offices a year ago. But what compelled these MPs to rifle through the boxes that contained such “highly personal” information? Of course, to find information that is “of public interest” (read: of partisan interest.) Who actually comes off looking worse here?

A sign that the times are indeed changing there. This woman has had enough:
“For over two years they haven’t allowed me access to my property,” Wu said, arms flailing as she walked.
…
“I have more faith than others,” she began. “I believe that this is my legal property, and if I cannot protect my own rights, it makes a mockery of the property law just passed,” she said, referring to landmark legislation approved this month by the National People’s Congress on the protection of private property.

Granted, she has connections in high places, so she hasn’t been intimidated or beaten yet.

Is that not some of the craziest shit you’ve seen in a while? Mario Dumont cost Jean Charest his job, and given the PQ’s track record with their leaders, Andre Boisclair is probably finished, also.
Anyways, I think the real winner tonight was Stephen Harper. The sovereignists had their lowest showing since 1970 (popular vote), and the ADQ are now the official opposition. How can the Conservatives not devise a spring federal election with those results?
Edit: Wow, Charest hung on, afterall. I guess the CBC and CTV kind of had a “Florida goes to Gore” moment.

I think you should strongly consider Hidalgo, Mexico for the next family vacation:
Visitors to the Parque EcoAlberto are put in the position of desperate workers struggling to escape across the Mexican border into the US.
They must hike through undergrowth, dash down steep hills and across rivers, and slip under barbed-wire fences.
Also, they must stay out of the crossfire of watchful border guards during the four-hour night-time ordeal known as ‘caminata nocturna’.
Each visitor pays 200 pesos (£10) for the privilege, in contrast to the £750 that real-life people-smugglers can demand.
Still sounds more fun than Epcot.

Who eats dog food? I mean, really…
An Ottawa woman is recovering after eating dog food and then becoming violently ill, in a case possibly related to the rat-poison-laced pet food that has killed 14 dogs and cats and sickened dozens more across North America.
Elaine Larabie said yesterday she ate some dog food last week in an effort to convince her terrier, Missy, to do the same.

But this does further confirm how idiotic our current drug laws are.
In research published Friday in The Lancet magazine, Professor David Nutt of Britain’s Bristol University and colleagues proposed a new framework for the classification of harmful substances, based on the actual risks posed to society. Their ranking listed alcohol and tobacco among the top 10 most dangerous substances.
Nutt and colleagues used three factors to determine the harm associated with any drug: the physical harm to the user, the drug’s potential for addiction, and the impact on society of drug use. The researchers asked two groups of experts psychiatrists specializing in addiction and legal or police officials with scientific or medical expertise to assign scores to 20 different drugs, including heroin, cocaine, Ecstasy, amphetamines, and LSD.
Nutt and his colleagues then calculated the drugs’ overall rankings. In the end, the experts agreed with each other but not with the existing British classification of dangerous substances.

At a small ESL school on Danforth. Seemed like a nice place to work, and the materials looked decent. I think the interview went well, and I should know by Wednesday if I got the position.
Otherwise, not a whole lot going on here. I really do need something soon, though.
